George O'Malley, 'Grey's Anatomy'
Season 6, episode 1, "Good Mourning"
Cause of death: Hit by a bus
Why it was a shock: Anyone keeping up with the behind-the-scenes brouhaha on "Grey's Anatomy" had a pretty good idea that T.R. Knight wasn't coming back to the show (he later claimed that his character had fewer pivotal storylines after her personally came out as gay), but his sudden death was probably still a surprise. Rumors that George might be recast floated around, which creator Shonda Rhimes quickly shot down, but it was thought the actor might simply move away, as opposed to die a violent death. Significantly, it was the first death of a core character in the cast -- the first of many to come.
