Director: Shane Carruth
Stars: Amy Seimetz, Shane Carruth
Indie cred: Not only did Carruth direct, write, produce, edit, design, score and star in the film, but he even distributed it himself, so as to have full control over its marketing and contextualization. It won a technical Special Jury Prize at Sundance, and received two Independent Spirit nods.
Why it's worth your while: Okay, we've already included Carruth for his ingenious debut "Primer."- but for this critic's money, his belated follow-up is even more startling. Try not to get to hung up on what it's actually about -- a man and woman are united, and find their identities altered, by a bio-engineered parasite -- and focus instead on feeling this overwhelmingly sensual work, with its searing imagery and epic sonic design.
