13 Films We Most Hope To See At The 2014 Cannes Film Festival
13. "How to Catch a Monster"
Director: Ryan Gosling
Stars: Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn
The premise: Every synopsis found online is a little cryptic, but all seem to agree that it's a blend of fantasy and film noir, in which a single mother is absorbed into a shadowy underworld while her son discovers a route into an underwater city.
Why we're excited: After “Blue Valentine,” “Drive” and “Only God Forgives,” Cannes is better for having Ryan Gosling on the red carpet, but there may be more to his directorial debut than mere vanity-project sheen. Gosling has been selective with his acting projects, so we're interested to see what he generates as a writer-director – the fantasy concept is ambitious, and the cast handpicked. Don't expect to see this one in Competition, but an Un Certain Regard or Directors' Fortnight debut would be a handsome start to The Goz's career behind the camera.
