11. '28 Weeks Later'
Release date: 2007
Scare factor (1-10): 9
Why it's great: Like many a horror sequel before it, "28 Weeks Later" could have been a dud followup to a great original. Instead, it not only lived up to its forebear but actually upped the ante, in the great tradition of James Cameron's powerhouse 1986 actioner "Aliens." Widening the scope of the chaos without losing any of "Days'" frightening, gritty immediacy, director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's balances action and horror with admirable aplomb as he sketches a pitch-black vision that's even darker and more intense than Boyle's original. Is it better than the first film? Not quite - but it comes damn close.
