What you'll be hearing about from across the pond

Why people will be buzzing: There aren't a lot of big-ticket American titles in Competition this year, so those who monitor Cannes for future awards bait have a lot of hopes pinned on this female-driven period western, which gives two-time Oscar winner Swank her meatiest-looking role in a while as a headstrong pioneer woman who partners up with a devious claim jumper (Jones) on a challenging Nebraska-to-Iowa trek. Even if you don't care about awards, however, there's every reason to look forward to Jones' first directorial effort since his haunting, underrated "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada," which won two awards at Cannes in 2007. Glendon Swarthout's novel was once developed for the screen by the late Paul Newman; with a premise that could invite comparisons to Kelly Reichardt's extraordinary "Meek's Cutoff," this one has a lot going for it.
