Will Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" gamble pay off?
There is no great secret to Marvel's success as a company. They develop material they like, they hire filmmakers they trust, and they support those filmmakers as best they can. "Guardians" is, by far, the strangest thing they've made since they had their break-through success with "Iron Man," and that's a sign of confidence by the studio. James Gunn's passion for the material is incredible, and anyone talking to him about the characters can see how deeply he loves Rocket Raccoon and the crazy cosmic world he inhabits. Can Marvel and Disney sell those characters to a public that doesn't know them yet? Well, there's no better marketing machine on the planet, and to be fair, Marvel's current "Guardians" book is selling five times more copies every month right now than "Iron Man" was when that film went into production, so one could argue this is a safer bet. It'll all come down to execution, and this team so far have proven themselves to be incredibly capable at making something look like a risk even as they do everything they can to deliver a big broad piece of entertainment that anyone can enjoy.
