Meryl Streep can't save your doomed YA project.
Movie Title: The Giver
"The Giver" is an expansive dystopian book that is, simply put, better left to a reader's imagination. Lois Lowry's 1993 Newbery winner takes the confusion and rebellion of adolescence, explores it in a "1984"-type Thought Police scenario, and allows us to connect with protagonist Jonas through his newfound convictions. As a movie, however, it just looks like a dreary "Pleasantville" retread. Even with Meryl Streep in the role of the draconian headmistress nicknamed "President Buzzkill" by our own Drew McWeeny, it's just a lifeless movie that doesn't draw enough parallels to the audience's universe to be compelling. God bless Meryl's wig choice though. That's some Emmylou Harris glamor.
