Robert Downey, Jr.
Best Post-'SNL' Moments: "Chaplin," "Iron Man," "Tropic Thunder"
Part of Lorne Michaels' ill-fated effort to retool the series with a number of young up-and-coming movie stars - Anthony Michael Hall, Randy Quaid and Joan Cusack also joined that season - Robert Downey Jr. arrived at Studio 8H with a hit movie (1985's "Weird Science") already under his belt. Unfortunately, Downey's successful launch of a couple of recurring characters (including the name-dropping actor Jimmy Chance) and host of celebrity impersonations (Sean Penn, George Michael and John Cougar Mellencamp) weren't enough to keep him from being dumped at the end of the season. Who knows where he would've ended up if Michaels' short-lived experiment had actually worked, but it's hard to imagine a more successful post-"SNL" career than his.
