Donna's deadly switcheroo
(Season 1, episode 12, "The Sleep of Babies")
In later years, the "Sons" storytelling would get so convoluted that most viewers would need a Carrie Mathison wall of crazy just to keep track of it all. What makes the death of Opie's wife Donna so powerful — and the build-up to it so soaked in dread — is how relatively simple it is. Agent Stahl has convinced Clay that Opie is a rat, Clay sends Tig to kill Opie to protect the club, only Opie and Donna decide to switch cars at the last moment. The sequence where Clay learns the truth about Opie, but too late to reach Tig and prevent a tragedy, is painfully tense, making the viewer, like Clay, wish that something other than the inevitable could happen now to the woman who looks so at peace driving her man's truck.
