Two of the Academy's biggest Best Picture mistakes occurred this century, which films were they?
1. Best Picture 2006 - 'Crash'
Who should have won:
"Brokeback Mountain," "Good Night, and Good Luck." or "Capote"
Way back in January 2005, this writer was made aware of a legitimate private survey of Academy members that showed "Crash" was in the lead even before the nominations were announced. So, while many saw this as a rejection of the critic's group dominating "Brokeback" it was more about the membership connecting with a film that almost all of them knew someone who appeared in it. The overrated melodrama featured well known, but veteran actors such as Matt Dillon, Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock and Brendan Fraser who have all worked in the industry from years and have almost sterling reputations on set and off. It didn't hurt that the film dealt with "white flight" which, sadly, too much of the membership can relate to. The worst part of the outcome is that "Crash" beat three of the better films of the decade; "Brokeback," "Good Night" and "Capote."
