7. The Tabloid/TV connection
For “Idol"’s first decade, it reliably produced a tabloid scandal every year; be it the Frenchie Davis X-rated video, allegations of a dalliance between Paula Abdul and contestant Corey Clark, to speculations of backstage infighting, the show regularly produced the sort of stories that used to stop TV shows dead in their tracks. But to everyone’s surprise, all the dirt rather than turning viewers off only increased their interest. Getting people talking about your show by any means necessary became the new order of the day.
