Oscar's choice: "The English Patient" and "Titanic"
Why: The Critics' Choice Movie Awards has really, since its inception, been a reflection of the overall critical consensus. That stretches to films like "The Social Network" triumphing, and even figures in the case of "Argo," which when you look at the history that year, ended up the critical champ. But particularly in the case of the Coens' "Fargo" and Curtis Hanson's "L.A. Confidential," it was a one-two punch of getting it right when the Academy went broader.
