Why exactly is he called Black Panther?
While it would be easy to say T’Challa got his name from the Black Panther Party, the character precedes the formation of that group by three months. However, the black panther was the logo for the Lowndes County Freedom Organization which was the organization’s forerunner. Whether Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were giving a shout-out to the Black Panther WWII battalion is up for debate.
Regardless of how Black Panther came about his name in reality, within the fiction of the Marvel universe it is a traditional Wakanda rank. T’Challa going by “Black Panther” is the equivalent of Tony Stark going by “Iron Man.” It’s a title, not a secret identity.
