10 things we still don't understand in 'A Good Day to Die Hard'

We get it's a 'Die Hard' movie but can we have some logic at work here?

Is it a vacation or is he trying to find his son?

Why does McClane keep saying his trip to Russia is supposed to be a vacation? The film clearly sets up that he's trying to find out why his estranged son is in a Russian jail. It seems like a joke the first time McClane mentions it, but he keeps repeating it like that was his actual intention.  Was an explanation lost in reshoots?
