10 things we still don't understand in 'A Good Day to Die Hard'
We get it's a 'Die Hard' movie but can we have some logic at work here?
Why can't John McClane find out his son is in the CIA?
Based on all that's happened in his life (ie, the four previous movies) McClane would be a living legend in CIA/FBI/Police circles. You're telling me he wouldn't have any contacts that would let him know what his son was up to? Wouldn't the CIA freak out when they discovered McClane was even headed to Russia on a plane?

February 18, 2013 at 11:08AM EST Reply to CommentHey guys, love the article and could agree more. This movie has a riduclous amount of plot holes and gaps (how would a drone get John and the prisoner out of Russia?) but I don't get the one about John Jr.'s Boot knife. So much of the action is unclear but this is the one time the director actually pre-establishes something (in fact he uses about five shots too many to do it). When they are in the safe house, Jr. gets the knife from a safe and opens the bottom to clearly reveal bullets, making it some kind of gun. Now I don't know if this is a real thing but in this movie real doesn't seem to matter much at all. But yeah, knife with a gun in the base. It's super convenient but actually the only think the movie sets up well (though not that we'll I guess if you're still having such confusion)!

John - Yes, Jr. has the ballistic knife. It's not clear from the way it's shot, but we can figure out that he must have used it to cut himself free. So how did John get out of his zip ties? Just by laughing?

As for Jr.'s knife, that's not the confusing part. Yes, the knife is established. When it comes out of the boot it wasn't clear to me that Jr. was grabbing it and not the bad guy, but once he starts cutting we can figure out it's Jr. But then how does McClane get out of his ties? Just by laughing? Only Jr. has a knife (and helpfully, the bad guys tie his hands behind his back so he can cut unseen, even though they cuff McClane Sr. in front)!
