Just who is Benedict Cumberbatch playing?
Is this what we think it is?
J.J. Abrams just can't help himself. He's got to play with the fan's expectations no matter what project he's working on. In this case, Abrams and Paramount released all the international trailers with the U.S. version on Apple's Trailer page. No matter whether it was dubbed or subtitled, every preview was 1:03 in length except the Japanese version. That preview included an extra 14 seconds of footage which included the familiar image to the left of this copy and the Cumberbatch's characters saying "Is there anything you would not do for your family?"
Any longtime "Star Trek" fan can see the similarities to the classic scene in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" where Spock sacrifices himself so the Enterprise can get out of danger from imminent destruction. His longtime friend Kirk races down to the Engine Room to find Spock dying of radiation. The image of their hands touching, but not as Spock tells Kirk to "Live long and propser" is an iconic and pivotal moment in the history of the franchise (in fact, it set the events of the next two films into motion). Could Abrams and his screenwriters be going down that road already with the franchise's reboot? And, more startling, could it be Kirk sacrificing himself for the good of the many this time around? Or, is Abrams just manipulating the fans heartstrings in a scene that may not appear in the movie or is something else entirely? To be determined.
