Size counts at FOX
Rarely has a network spent so much time discussing exactly how much time so many shows will be spending on the air in a given season. We know that "Sleepy Hollow" will get at least 15 episodes this year, up from 13 last year. We know "American Idol" will have 37 hours next year, down from 50+ in seasons past. We know that "Gotham" has been ordered for 16 episodes, more than the normal pre-season order for a drama. We know that "Wayward Pines" and "Gracepoint" and 10-and-out limited series. We know that "Utopia" is airing two nights a week to start the fall, but that the Friday airings might not continue, but that the reality series could theoretically run forever. FOX has perhaps more pieces than any other network between fall and spring and it's no surprise that the network is extra conscious about how long anything might be occupying any particular space. There's so much commitment to precision that FOX declined to announce a January schedule in May for the first time in years, perhaps for fear of having to do excessive revisions.
