The CW doesn't program spinoffs where you expect them to go
Smart money says that you put a spinoff behind the programming mothership, let it build strength and then send it off on its own. CBS knows how to play by those rules, putting "NCIS: New Orleans" after "NCIS" on Tuesday nights. But, for the second year in a row, The CW has zagged where others zigged. Last year we expected "The Originals" to go after "Vampire Diaries" on Thursdays. The CW decided to let "The Originals" stand on its own, leading off Tuesdays, and the bet paid off. This year, we made a similar guess that "The Flash" would be a perfect pairing with "Arrow" on Wednesday nights. Instead, The CW has sent "The Originals" to Mondays and given Flash that Tuesday 8 p.m. slot. So next year, when The CW orders "Chubby Reign" and "Kidney of Dixie," we'll know better than to make any assumptions. Spinoffs? You're on your own!
