How Pixar researched, wrote, designed, lit and animated their new feature
For Sharon Calahan, the film’s cinematographer, the most challenging part of the movie to light was the introduction of Forrest Woodbush, the mysterious Styracosaurus also known as The Pet Collector. When we first meet him, he’s hiding, blending in with the aspen trees.
“That was tricky because normally we’re lighting to get characters to pop and really stand out of the world. We don’t do a lot of trying to hide characters in plain sight,” Calahan told HitFix. “That one took a while to get it to feel authentic to get what the dappled light from the aspen leaves moving would feel like and also to get this character to blend but still be visible enough to the viewer but [have it be believable] that Arlo can’t see him.”
