"Last Son" (2006)
Given that Goyer has tapped, for the third time in the franchise, General Zod as an antagonist in the film, it would only make sense to visit (or re-visit) his first run-in with the Boy in Blue under the currently accepted canon and timeline. That happened in 2006's "Last Son," written by DC universe co-architect Geoff Johns (whose work Goyer has said greatly influenced him while writing the film, but more on that shortly). The story was co-written by none other than Richard Donner, director of "Superman: The Movie" and (essentially) "Superman II," two films that have long stood as milestones in the military general's history. Here, freed of the Phantom Zone, Zod comes to earth looking for his son, as well as the (super)son of the man who banished him to that great nothing, with an eye toward rebuilding Krypton anew.
