Captain Marvel (formerly Ms. Marvel)
Debuted: As Ms. Marvel, Marvel Super Heroes #13 (March 1968) as Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel #1 (August 2012)
Previous Movie or TV appearances: "X-Men" (animated ), "The Super Hero Squad Show" (animated), "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes" (animated), "Ultimate Spider-Man"
Why: Carol Danvers' comic book origin is a bit convoluted, but the long and short of it is that she's an Air Force Major who developed super powers after being exposed to alien Kree technology. One of Marvel's oldest alien races the Kree haven't been introduced on screen yet likely because there is debate over whether they can be used in Fox's "Fantastic Four" movies or Marvel's "Avengers" series. Recently, Danvers took on the mantle of Captain Marvel after going with the 70's feminist inspired Ms. Marvel for almost 30 years. She has super strength, the ability to fly, invulnerability and can absorb and discharge energy. So, basically she's powerful enough that she could give Superman a run for his money. Danvers' few non-print appearances also make her an excellent candidate because it allows a filmmaker more leeway in adapting her for the big screen. As a member of The Avengers, she's also prime spin-off material if Joss Whedon decides to introduce her in "The Avengers 2."
