Johnny Depp back in talks to play Whitey Bulger in 'Black Mass'
Johnny Depp may be playing the infamous gangster Whitey Bulger after all.
With "Out of the Furnace" director Scott Cooper in talks to helm Universal's Bulger biopic "Black Mass," Depp is apparently once again interested in playing the recently-incarcerated Boston mob kingin, according to Deadline.
Depp was previously connected to the project with Barry Levinson directing, but exited over alleged salary disagreements.
The 81-year-old Bulger was the prime inspiration for both Jack Nicholson's "The Departed" character and the one played by Pete Postlethwaite in the Ben Affleck-directed "The Town." In fact, Affleck and Matt Damon at one point planned their own big screen take on Bulger, before moving on to other projects.
Depp played 1930s gangster John Dillinger in Michael Mann's "Public Enemies" in 2009 (pictured). He'll next be seen in Wally Pfister's sci-fi thriller "Transcendence," followed by the musical "Into the Woods." Depp is also in early talks to star in Marvel's "Doctor Strange."
