In what's becoming something of an annual ritual, Paula Abdul is once again trying to cast doubts on whether she'll return to judge the next season of "American Idol."

The former pop star (who appears to believe she still has a singing career) appeared on David Letterman Thursday night where the late night icon asked her about her status on America's most popular TV show.

"I just said that I'm not sure," Abdul said. "I love my job, I really do...It's called, um, negotiating."

And as for her fellow judge Simon Cowell's similar threats?

"He's just trumping me," she said. "He has another year left."
