'Star Wars' spin-off director Gareth Edwards still on board 'Godzilla 2,' but it may take a while
With the news that "Godzilla" director Gareth Edwards has signed on to do the first (of, presumably, many) "Star Wars" spin-off films, the future of "Godzilla 2" was thrown into question.
However, according to Shock Till You Drop, "Godzilla" producer Legendary Pictures' Thomas Tull promises fans that Edwards will return to call the shots on the sequel...it just may take a while for it to happen.
The mysterious "Star Wars" spin-off is scheduled to hit screens in December 2016 -- one year after J.J. Abrams' "Episode VII" -- which would prevent Edwards from returning to the big green guy until at least 2017, meaning "Godzilla 2" won't be in theaters any earlier than 2018.
"Gareth's filmmaking talent makes him one of his generation's most creative and visionary directors," said Tull. "The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another 'Godzilla,' but who knew it would a 'Star Wars' installment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth's imprint on the 'Star Wars' universe."
Now entering its second week of release, "Godzilla" has so far stomped its way to a monstrous $117 million in the U.S.
