'Avatar' Blue-ray sets 1st-day record
James Cameron's "Avatar" has made history as the highest grossing film ever ($2.71 billion worldwide and counting) and now it's set another record on Blu-ray.
Debuting on Earth Day, "Avatar" nearly tripled the existing single-day Blu-ray record with 1.5 million units sold. The former record holder was "The Dark Knight" with 600,000 copies in December 2008. That's a pretty big jump.
According to the LA Times, "Avatar" sold "north of 4 million units" of Blu-ray and DVD combined. DVD sales numbers are not independently verified, but that would be a record for a single day of home-video sales.
