ABC's 'Detroit 1-8-7' ditches its mockumentary format

When it was announced in May, ABC's "Detroit 1-8-7" was described as a show about a Detroit precinct being observed by a documentary film crew. That description is only half-true now.

According to NY Mag's Vulture blog, ABC has decided to ditch the mockumentary conceit, turning "Detroit 1-8-7" into a TV series about Detroit cops. The change in format will require extensive reshooting on the pilot, which features an ensemble cast including Michael Imperioli, Jon Michael Hill, James McDaniel and Natalie Martinez.

The report says ABC felt the stories and characters were strong enough without the documentary structure and that the conceit was distancing for viewers.

"Detroit 1-8-7" is set to premiere on ABC on September 21.
