Marion Cotillard claims she won't be a villain in 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Does Marion Cotillard play a baddie in the highly-anticipated threequel "The Dark Knight Rises" or not?

Her character is officially listed a business woman named Miranda Tate, but rumors have been traded for months that she's actually playing Talia, the daughter of "Batman Begins" villain R'as al Ghul (Liam Neeson). With Neeson confirmed to appear in "Dark Knight Rises," such rumors don't seem very far-fetched.

Not so fast, says the French Oscar winner ("Ma Vie en Rose"). In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cotillard maintains that her role is simply Tate, who "is fascinated by Wayne Enterprises. They go through difficulties, and she wants to help provide the world clean energies." Cotillard even added, "She's a good guy" and that she stays that way throughout the film.

Still, it's worth remembering that Neeson's character was not what he seemed in "Batman Begins." Maybe cinematic treachery runs in the family.

What we do know for sure is that "The Dark Knight Rises" reunites Cotillard with her "Inception" co-stars Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. They join returning cast members Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman.

The film opens July 20.
