Joss Whedon responds to Wally Pfister's 'Avengers' diss

When Wally Pfister spoke to students at the Ringling College of Art and Design last week he never dreamed he'd give the Sarasota, FL. art school so much publicity or find himself in the middle of a pseudo controversy.

Pfister is the Academy Award winning cinematographer behind "Inception," "The Dark Knight," "The Dark Knight Rises," "Batman Begins," "The Prestige" and "Moneyball" (among other credits).  During a Q&A he was asked if he'd ever make work on a fourth "Batman" film if given the chance. Pfister responded with a "never say never" answer, but unintentionally stirred things up when discussing Joss Whedon's "Avengers."

Pfister was quoted by the Sarasota Herald Tribune as saying, "What’s really important is storytelling. None of it matters if it doesn’t support the story. I thought 'The Avengers' was an appalling film. They’d shoot from some odd angle and I'd think, why is the camera there? Oh, I see, because they spent half a million on the set and they have to show it off. It took me completely out of the movie. I was driven bonkers by that illogical form of storytelling."

Oddly, the Herald Tribune removed that portion of the Q&A from their story. Why is unclear.  However, Entertainment Weekly went to Whedon to find out what he thought of Pfister's comments.  Whedon responded with, "I’m sorry to hear it, I’m a fan."

"The Avengers" was shot by Seamus McGarvey who was nominated for an Academy Award for his superb work in Joe Wright's "Atonement."  He's also shot "The Hours,""World Trade Center," "We Need To Talk About Kevin" and has reunited with Wright for "Anna Karenina."

No word yet if Pfister has followed up his initial remarks.
