Meryl Streep may go 'into the Woods' with 'Chicago' director Rob Marshall

"Chicago" director Rob Marshall is bringing the giddy post-modern fairy tale musical "Into the Woods" to the big screen, and he seems to be gathering a formidable cast, led by none other than Oscar-magnet Meryl Streep.

Earlier this week, Marshall reportedly held a script reading that featured such noted stars as Anna Kendrick, Patrick Wilson, Allison Janney, Michael McGrath and more.

According to Broadway World, Streep was unable to make the reading, but is in talks to appear in the film.

"Into the Woods" featured music and lyrics by Steven Sondheim ("Sweeny Todd," "Company") and a book by James Lapine, and mashes up the plots of various Brothers Grimm tales including Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood and more. It was first staged in 1986.

Streep is being eyed to play the film's villainous Witch, a role originally performed by Bernadette Peters.

Streep showed of her sining skills a few years back in the hit ABBA-derived "Mama Mia!" She picked up her third Oscar earlier this year for "The Iron Lady," and recently starred opposite Tommy Lee Jones in "Hope Springs."
