Maggie Smith isn't leaving 'Downton Abbey,' unless she is
Emmy and Oscar winner Maggie Smith isn't really planning on leaving "Downton Abbey," or at least that's where we ended this week.
The New York Times summarizes the story thusly:
Last weekend, London's Daily Mail quoted anonymous sources saying that Maggie Smith had asked that her character, The Dowager Countess, be written off of "Downton Abbey."
This followed similar earlier unsourced reports about Smith's possibly tenuous contractual status.
However, The Paper of Record got an outright denial from production company Carnival Films, which said "[I]t's not true that she's leaving." PBS and Smith's own representatives, however, offered no comment.
