Fun Rumor: 'Idol' failed to replace Mariah Carey with Jennifer Lopez
File this under: Rumors than can never be disproved, so we might as well enjoy them.
The Hollywood Reporter dropped a bombshell this week, reporting that "American Idol" had hatched a plan in recent weeks to stealthily replace Mariah Carey with former "Idol" judge Jennifer Lopez. The plan fell through, apparently, because Carey's people threatened litigation. As they would.
The trade goes on to say that the show is already beginning the search to replace Carey after the season and that Nicki Minaj and, in fact, the whole judging panel could be out the door.
This is what happens when you hit ratings lows on a weekly basis.
Not surprisingly, FOX denies the whole thing.
"This is just another ridiculous Idol judge rumor, likely started by talks of Jennifer performing on the finale," FOX states.
So there you go.
It would have been fun to see how Ryan Seacrest would have handled that particular upheaval. Instead, "Idol" will limp towards its finale and we'll perhaps see J-Lo there.
