Do new 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' set photos reveal a major spoiler?
Warning: Possible spoilers below
For longtime fans of Spider-Man comics, the character Gwen Stacy has a dark shadow looming over her.
In an infamous storyline in the early '70s, Spider-Man attempts to rescue Stacy after the nefarious Green Golbin drops her from a bridge. The speed of her fall kills her once she hits Spidey's webbing, which was intended to save her.
After being built up as the love interest of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) in the first "Amazing Spider-Man," many fans have wondered whether the upcoming sequel will follow through with her original comic book fate.
Superhero Hype has a number of recent set photos that may reveal an answer.
In the photos, Stacy (Emma Stone) is seen standing by a bridge, wearing an outfit very similar to the one worn by her comic counterpart when she met her tragic ending.
It's unconfirmed if director Marc Webb is indeed talking the sequel in that direction, but all the pieces add up, as Shailene Woodley ("The Descendants") is joining the series as future love interest Mary-Jane Watson. However, Green Goblin doesn't appear to be one of the film's villains -- instead, Spidey is facing Electro (Jamie Foxx) and the Rhino (Paul Giamatti) this time around.
We may have to wait until next summer to find out.
The film also stars Dane DeHaan, Felicity Jones, Chris Cooper, and Sally Field.
"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" opens May 2, 2014.
