New 'Robocop' coming together quickly
MGM has made a flurry of business decisions to try and get film production up and going again since it was sold earlier this year. "Bond 23" is finally heading toward production and the studio made deals to distribute "Red Dawn" and "The Cabin in the Woods." On project the previous management was hot on was a reboot of the classic 80's genre flick "Robocop." Darren Aronofsky was developing the film for some time, but now the studio is going in another direction. They've already hired up and coming Brazillian director Jose Padilha ("Elite Squad") and this week they brought on a screenwriter to get things moving.
According to Deadline, Josh Zetumer will pen the first draft of the new "Robocop." Zetumer worked on the now scuttled "Dune" remake with Peter Berg and the initial take of the fourth "Bourne Identity" before Universal decided to create a spinoff with writer/director Tony Gilroy. No word on what Zetumer and Padilha's take on the new incarnation will be, but the project is definitely on the fast track.
