Report: 'How Do You Know' cost $120 million
Unless it's the rare cheaply produced "Paranormal Activity," Hollywood movies usually cost at least $50 million, but a report surfaced this week that demonstrates to moviegoers how budgets can sometimes spiral completely out of control.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jim Brooks' new romantic comedy/drama "How Do You Know" cost a staggering $120 million before tax incentives brought the final tally down to $110 million. Why do you ask? It appears all of the stars got their high end rates including Reese Witherspoon ($15 million), Jack Nicholson ($12 million), Owen Wilson ($10 million) and Paul Rudd ($3 million). Plus, Brooks will receive $10 million for writing, directing and producing (as well as backend if it does well).
What's so surprising about this is that none of the stars involved have had a significant hit on their own over the past four years. More distressing is that Brooks is coming off one of the biggest flops in his career, the Adam Sandler comedy "Spanglish."
Sony is hoping "Do You Know" turns into this year's "It's Complicated," but that Meryl Streep rom com only grossed $229 million worldwide. When you factor in marketing and distribution costs "Do You Know" is going to have to make significantly more to even break even.
