Bryan Singer insists 'X-Men: First Class' has to be about Professor X and Magneto
It's been a strange road for Bryan Singer since the disappointment of "Superman Returns" in 2006 when his reputation as an infant terrible hit new heights. He directed the Tom Cruise Nazi-thriller "Valkyrie" to surprisingly solid returns, but since then has been attaching himself to almost every possible project in town. That includes returning to the "X-Men" franchise where he's slated to helm "Young X-Men." Speaking to the Los Angeles Times this week for no reason it seems other than to hype his own involvement in the projects, Singer made two surprising revelations.
The first is he sees "Young X-Men" more about Prof. Charles Xavier and Magneto even though that storyline played out in the firs three "X-Men" films.
Singer told the Times, "Just doing younger mutants is not enough. The story needs to be more than that. I love the relationship between Magneto and Xavier, these two men who have diametrically opposite points of view but still manage to be friends -- to a point. They are the ultimate frenemies."
Second is that "X-Men" franchise producer Lauren Schuler Donner also pitched Singer on doing a fourth installment of the "old" "X-Men." That's somewhat surprising as many believed the slate of new "X-Men" films meant Fox and Marvel had given up on trying to bring back the original and very busy crew. But a chance for Singer to direct his old adversary, er, actor Halle Berry again? We're so there.
