Reese Witherspoon and Matthew McConaughey are jumping in the 'Mud'

Writer and director Jeff Nichols' created a bit stir with his Sundance drama "Take Shelter" this past January.  "Shelter" won Critic's Week at Cannes in May and stars Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain have received Oscar buzz for their performances.  Now, Nichols has cast Reese Witherspoon and Matthew McConaughey to star in his next indie, the intriguingly titled "Mud."

The indie will find McConaughey playing a charismatic fugitive named Mud who forms an unlikely friendship with a 14-year-old boy named Ellis (Tye Sheridan).  Ellis decides he's going to do everything he can to help his friend escape from the law and some bounty hunters to reunite with his soul mate, Juniper (Reese Witherspoon).

It's unclear when production on "Mud" will begin, but the film will be one of the few independents Witherspoon has made in her career.  However, if it shoots this fall it could easily debut at Cannes next May or the Venice or Toronto Film Festivals in 2012.
