Kanye West performs at Gil Scott-Heron funeral
Legendary poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron's funeral occurred on Thursday, and many fans, friends and industry big-hitters predictably came to pay their last respects. One of those included Kanye West, who performed "Lost in the World" from his latest "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" at the Harlem Riverside Church service.
It was on that original recording that West sampled Scott-Heron's "Comment No. 1" with the phrase, "Who will survive in America?". Scott-Heron had also sampled West's "Flashing Lights" on his last album. Stevie Wonder was also reportedly on hand, and Scott-Heron's daughter read a poem for her father's memory. Heron, a true African-American trailblazer, was behind songs and phrases like "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" and "Whitey on the Moon."
He died by unknown causes last Friday (May 27) at 62.
