Jim Carrey, Harrison Ford, Nicole Kidman and others struggle to get back on top
The Situation: We're a long way from her hot streak ten years ago that included "Moulin Rouge!," "The Others," "The Hours" and "Cold Mountain." Since then, she's toplined risible remakes ("The Stepford Wives," "Bewitched" and "Invasion"), misfired epics ("Golden Compass" and "Australia") and the singularly awful "Trespass." Kidman's recent high points have been acclaimed performances in the relatively little-seen indies "Margot at the Wedding" and "Rabbit Hole," but are they enough? The last studio hit she was associated with was "Just Go With It." 2013's "Stoker" kept a low-profile and Lee Daniels' "The Paperboy" was hardly lauded.
Why there's hope: People seemed to really like "Strangerland" out of 2015 Sundance, and Alchemy picked it up for distro from there. Kidman leads "Queen of the Desert" with beloved Robert Pattinson and James Franco, and she may excel in offbeat "The Family Fang" (also out this year) with Jason Bateman and Christopher Walken.
