11. 'The Returned' (2012-)
Why it was scary: Unlike most of the shows on this list, "The Returned" (French title: "Les Revenants") is terrifying for the emotional dilemma it represents: namely, what would you do if your deceased loved one suddenly showed up at your house alive, with no recollection of having died and never having aged? For much of the series' first season (a second is currently in production), we are kept off-balance as to the exact nature of the resurrected denizens of a small French town, which adds a layer of unshakable dread to the reunions.
Scariest moment: When one man (Monsieur Costa) finds himself unable to cope with the reappearance of his late wife, he ties her up in his house before burning it to the ground and jumping to his death. While we all like to think we'd welcome the resurrection of our loved ones, Costa's descent into insanity depicts an eerie counterpoint to that comforting (and perhaps unrealistic) idea. [Note: A&E's American remake of the series was not as well-received, so it might be wise to stick to the subtitled version.]
