Do these early players have a shot at awards season?
Best Actor - Channing Tatum, "22 Jump Street"
You don't have to tell me: Channing Tatum will be in the Best Actor (or maybe Best Supporting Actor) conversation later this year for "Foxcatcher," and having seen his wonderful work in it, I'm completely OK with that. But honestly? He's at least as good, if not better, in this manic comedy sequel, which further reveals his quicksilver comic timing and beguiling willingness to riff on his presumed screen persona. (Just thinking of his faux-Mexican accent in the film's opening sequence makes me laugh on cue.) He's rapidly turning into one of the most surprising and agile leading men in the movies today, and while it'll never happen in a million years, it would be lovely to see that versatility recognized, one way or another.
