"The Shipping News"
Director: Lasse Hallström
Stars: Kevin Spacey, Julianne Moore, Cate Blanchett, Judi Dench
What happened: Kevin Spacey shows up again, and you could probably make an argument for "K-Pax" this same year (though I'm not sure how many took that one all that seriously). The "American Beauty" star may have picked up two Oscars in the 1990s but in the 2000s he was the king of non-starting awards contenders. This one was an interesting case as it looked like Miramax's big play for most of the early season (after two-straight Best Picture nominees for director Lasse Hallström's "The Cider House Rules" and "Chocolat"). That was until Todd Field's "In the Bedroom" finally started to find traction. In classic Harvey Weinstein fashion, the savvy awards hawker went with what stuck.
