Rick kills Shane
Episode: "Better Angels"
What Happens: After building up for almost the entirety of the series, Rick and Shane have their final confrontation. Shane, who had been morally questionable for quite a while finally goes too far here, attempting to lure Rick into a trap and trying to kill his former friend. In the end, Rick gets the better of Shane and ends his life. A few minutes later, Carl ends Shane's death.
Ramifications: For a long time, Shane had been a cancer in the group, a cancer that needed to be cut out and that finally was removed here. The series spent an awfully long time with Shane going bad—some would say far too long—and his demise allowed things to, finally, move forward. His death also ended any potential for Lori to choose Shane over Rick (which Shane would have loved and which would have destroyed the group entirely). Plus, Carl shot zombie Shane after it looking a little like Carl was going to shoot living Rick. It showed us that Carl could kill zombies and would become more and more useful in the fight. Mostly though, it showed that Rick would kill the living when threatened, that he would get dirty if it would help the group.
