Rick shoots the zombie girl
What Happens: For Rick Grimes, waking up in a world overrun by zombies must have been pretty shocking, but audiences expected it. What we didn't necessarily expect was for Rick to find a little girl in the desolation and for that little girl to be a wee walker, with half of her mouth torn off. And then what we expected least of all was for Rick to whip out his revolver and blow her away.
Ramification: It's the opening scene of the entire series and it sets the unflinching template immediately. Kids aren't off-limits from this infection. And if it's necessary to kill a zombie-kid, it's not like they're actual kids. And, with that, we also learn everything we need to know about Rick. He's a man of action, even when he doesn't know what's happening around him, he has a self-preservation instinct. Everything that follows stems from that very first sequence, everything we know about this world.
