"A Good Year"
Director: Ridley Scott
Stars: Russell Crowe, Abbie Cornish, Albert Finney, Marion Cotillard, Freddie Highmore
What happened: Scott was an epic dramatist. Crowe, a serious actor with a bad boy reputation. Flipping their personas upside down would only excite audiences and Oscar voters, right? Only in theory. A well-known excuse for Scott to film a ditty around his vacation home in Provence, "A Good Year" reeked of privilege, excess and "white people problem" drama as the American economy hit new slumps. Not being particularly funny didn’t help its chances either. "A Good Year" was a movie for no one and found exactly that audience when it arrived in November ’06.
