The 22nd annual show airs April 14
Only three films have won both the MTV Movie Award for Best Movie and the Academy Award for Best Picture.
It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that the pop culture litmus test for younger movie-goers wouldn't exactly line up with the choices of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over the years. And indeed, only three films to date have won both the Best Movie prize from MTV and the Best Picture Oscar from the Academy. It took seven years for the first occurrence to happen as "Titanic" won both honors in 1998. After that, it was "Gladiator" in 2001 and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" in 2004. Fun fact on the latter: all three "Lord of the Rings" films won the MTV Movie Award for Best Movie. Oh well, one more: a grand total of 32 Best Picture Oscar nominees have been nominated by MTV for Best Movie. This year there are two: "Django Unchained" and "Silver Linings Playbook."
