4. "Only God Forgives"
Director: Nicolas Winding Refn
Cast: Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas
It's no secret that I fell pretty hard for the last film Refn and Gosling brought to the Croisette two years ago, so their follow-up was obviously always going to be near the top of my can't-wait list. And that's before you add one of my favorite working actresses to the mix, tease me with stills that look every bit as glamtastic as "Drive" and feed me a logline so ludicrous -- a gangster and a Bangkok policeman face off in a Thai-style boxing match -- it has to be a little bit special. Not to mention bloody. "Drive" jolted the 2011 Competition with a shot of genre expertise that Cannes isn't typically renowned for; Thierry Fremaux tried to repeat the ploy with a host of US thrillers last year, but none of them quite panned out. Can Refn do the trick again? Even if he can't, some sleek, sexy distraction never goes amiss in an arduous festival lineup.
