10. "The Past"
Director: Asghar Farhadi
Cast: Bérénice Bejo, Tahar Rahim
Iranian auteur Farhadi's last two features, "About Elly" and "A Separation," premiered modestly at the Berlinale. But following the latter's spectacular run, which saw it rack up any number accolades and critical hosannas between its Golden Bear and Oscar victories, it would appear that he's ready for his Cannes close-up. It helps, of course, that he's travelled to France for his follow-up, though like the proverbial Jenny from the block, he knows where he came from: Franco-Iranian immigration is the theme of this Paris-set romantic drama, which stars recent Oscar nominee Bejo (who replaced the ubiquitous Marion Cotillard) and "A Prophet" star Rahim. I don't envy Farhadi having to follow up a critical hit of the magnitude of "A Separation," so this significant change of scene seems a wise choice. With its French release allegedly scheduled for May, this one appears to be a lock for the fest.
