HitFix tallies up the numeric significance of this year's crop of nominees
2: Number of Americans nominated in the Best Actor category
Along with the expected nods for Brit Gary Oldman ("Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy") and Frenchman Jean Dujardin ("The Artist") in the Best Actor category today, the surprise nomination of Mexican thesp Demian Bichir (for his performance in the little-seen "A Better Life") brought the total number of foreigners in the category to three - leaving George Clooney ("The Descendants") and Brad Pitt ("Moneyball") as the only two Americans in the field. The last time that happened, as it turns out, was way back in (cue sci-fi music) the year 2000, when Aussie-New Zealander Russell Crowe ("Gladiator"), Aussie Geoffrey Rush ("Quills") and Spanish actor Javier Bardem ("Before Night Falls") dominated the category. What's different this year is that while Crowe ended up taking home the Oscar in that past contest, 2012 still looks like Clooney's time to shine.
