HitFix tallies up the numeric significance of this year's crop of nominees
21: Number of nominations scored by Sony Pictures
Thanks in part to a surprising 5 nominations for David Fincher's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (particularly unexpected was Rooney Mara's nod for Best Actress), Sony managed to surpass all of its rivals with a whopping 21 total nominations today for films including "Moneyball" (6 nods), "Midnight in Paris" (4 nods) and "A Separation" (2 nods including Best Foreign Language film). Its closest rivals were Paramount (which took the domestic box-office crown last year) with 18 nominations and The Weinstein Company with 16. Thankfully for Sony, while the former studio received a total of 11 nominations from Scorsese's "Hugo" alone, none of its other films managed to place in any of the major categories this year (though it did boast 3 out of the 5 Animated Feature picks).
