Do we have a new Queen of Sundance ready to be crowned?
US Doc competition emphasizes Oscar
The 2014 Sundance doc slate didn't lack for future Oscar contenders, with "Overnighters" and "Life Itself" among several candidates to go from Oscar Shortlist to nominees, but maybe there wasn't a slam-dunk, wire-to-wire Oscar contender like "Twenty Feet From Stardom" two years ago or "The Cove" at the 2009 Festival. To that end, both "Stardom" director Morgan Neville and "The Cove" director Louie Psihoyos are back in competition this year with "Best of Enemies" and "Racing Extinction," respectively. In some years, those Oscar-Winning big names might have gone in as documentary premieres rather than as competition entries. In a slightly odd twist, though, the US Documentary Competition won't have a Day One film this year, as the American Festival-opening doc will be from the doc premieres field.
